What’s the secret to sustainable weight loss? That’s the $64 billion question dominating the American dieting industry.
For entrepreneur EJ Ogenyi, the answer is simple but far from easy: you need to focus on daily actions that simplify healthy eating and make consistent exercise a no-brainer.
Originally from Nigeria and now settled in New Orleans with her husband and adorable toddler, EJ struggled with her own weight for years. She finally figured out a sustainable way to keep the weight off for good, and she now shares her knowledge as a lifestyle coach working with busy female entrepreneurs. As if her work as a mom and business owner wasn’t impressive enough, EJ also has a fulltime job as an applications engineer. (She’s basically a bona fide superhero.)
With lots of ambition, a million responsibilities, and zero free time, EJ needed a way to stay as organized and efficient as possible. She started using dapulse as a way to manage her business. Amazingly, she has since discovered that dapulse is an equally powerful tool for her clients to achieve their weight loss goals, too.
We’re not out to compete with Weight Watchers or the Atkins diet just yet But still, it’s amazing to see that the things people need to be successful at work—clearly outlining your work, being held accountable for your actions, and receiving recognition when you complete your work—are the exact same factors that help people successfully lose weight.
Read on to hear how EJ uses dapulse to hold herself and her clients accountable.
On launching her own business: “I had been wanting to do something in the wellness field field for almost 8 years, but I didn’t start what I’m doing now until 2013. I had struggled with weight for years, and I joke that it took me 9 years to lose 33 pounds, because I kept losing it and regaining it over and over again. I’d learned a lot along the way, and knew a lot of women who shared the same struggles, so I wanted to share my knowledge and decided it was finally time to get this dream off the ground.”
On getting started with dapulse: “I’m a very visual person, and the idea of seeing everything that I need to get done in green is very compelling to me. I use dapulse for every aspect of my business: when I’m creating a product, launching a product, writing an email series, or updating my editorial calendar. dapulse has essentially made it so that all my business activities are centralized in one place. As a business owner who still has a 9-5, that’s huge.”
On improving her workflow: “I’m very good at creating content but horrible at promoting it, so I have a vault of about 275 blog posts that are totally under-utilized. When I first started out, I was focused only on writing. I didn’t focus on SEO, headline writing, or anything like that.
Now I use dapulse to focus on what’s done or not done. For each blog post, I can see, has the headline been optimized? Is there an SEO keyword? Has an SEO meta description been inserted? Is there an image that looks pretty for Pinterest? Any blog post that has been checked off ‘done’ in all green is ready to go out.”
On coaching her clients via shareable boards: “I have a program called Lighter in 8 Weeks and I use dapulse to hold my clients accountable. I invite them as guests and they receive their tasks as pulses where we track things like breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Before, they were just telling me what they were eating and doing via Google Forms, which was fine for me, but I was the only one seeing that information. Now, they don’t have to deal with their email or fill out a single form anymore; it’s all in the app.”
On how dapulse helps create accountability: “I think it’s really powerful for my clients to see their own goals. For example, they can see: ‘This is how I did on Sunday… it was all green!’ Or if another day, there was a yellow, that can serve as a conversation point for ‘Hey, what happened on Monday at lunchtime?’ Or if another day was essentially a big sea of red, we can troubleshoot what happened. Was it a stressful day? Did you not plan for it enough? dapulse is very visual, so it helps them as well as it helps me. They’re not just holding themselves accountable to me; they’re holding themselves accountable to themselves. At the end of the week, all I do is give them an accountability report which is like a virtual high-five.”
On gamifying wellness: “I love using dapulse as a tool to help my clients focus on taking actions and seeing green, as opposed to obsessing over specific numbers. Their actions are really what matter. If you’re acting consistently—if you’re green consistently—you’ll start seeing the results you want. It doesn’t have to be 100%; 80-85% is a really good start. dapulse focuses on the actions you’re taking, and the results are just a part of it.”
On using dapulse rather than a lifestyle app: “There are a lot of specific habit-training lifestyle apps out there that you can use to track your clients. As your client base grows, so does how much you’re spending; that was one of my worries. Also, they make it easy to create programs, but if you want to get into your own methodology or use your own platform, that’s where it gets very tricky.
With dapulse, I can have an unlimited number of guests. It grows with my business so I’m not paying for stuff I can’t afford from the very beginning. Plus, I don’t want to have to learn a software to help my clients the best way I know how. I just want something that’s visual and that makes it easy to hold them accountable.”
On achieving a new level of organization: “I’m using dapulse to run my entire business in one place. I’m so organized now. I don’t have that many excuses to procrastinate anymore! It used to be ‘Someone’s interested in a session… I’ll draft the email later today.’ Now all I need to do is copy, paste, edit, and send.”
